The Anti-Waste Effort for Stress-Testing of Materials on Exoplanets (AWESOME) Sink is a special building that breaks down items (not fluids/gasses) into points based on their complexity or rarity.
The AWESOME Sink serves two important purposes:
- Creating FICSIT Coupons for use in the AWESOME Shop
- Destroying excess materials
Unlocking and Building the AWESOME Sink
The AWESOME Sink requires the “Resource Sink Bonus Program” Milestone (Tier 2). Once researched, you an find the building in the “Special” tab.
You can build as many AWESOME Sinks as you need. Each sink contributes to the same point total; wherever you build sinks, they will all open the same shared UI for printing coupons.
Earning FICSIT Coupons
Every item fed into the AWESOME Sink’s Conveyor Belt input is destroyed and converted into points. These points eventually earn you FICSIT Coupons. The cost for each coupon increases as you earn more, so it will become more difficult to earn coupons as you progress.
Coupons are spent on unlocking mostly cosmetic items in the AWESOME Shop. The shop also includes one-time purchases of materials, but I would not suggest buying these as each coupon becomes more and more difficult to earn as you earn more.
Each item has a specific value measured in points based on its complexity or rarity. For example, Caterium Ore will earn seven (7) points each while Caterium Ingots will earn forty-two (42) points each as the latter has an increased complexity (mined vs. mined & smelted). Common Iron Ingots will earn one (1) points each compared to the rarer Caterium Ore earning seven (7) points each despite having the same complexity (mined).
For a full list of Materials and their associated point value, see the Value Table.
Alien DNA Capsules
Alien DNA Capsules can also be fed into the AWESOME Sink like any other item, but they have there own separate point counter for earning FICSIT Coupons.
Similar to normal points, earning coupons will start quickly, but will ramp up in required points with each earned coupon.
Items That Cannot be Sinked
- Uranium Waste and items that use it as a crafting material
- Consumables and Food (Except Medicinal Inhalers)
- Creature Remains and Proteins
- Limited Special Items (Power Slugs, Power Shards, Hard Drives, Alien Items)
- Cosmetics like Statues, Cups, and the Boom Box
- Special FICSMAS Advent Calendar Items (Superposition Oscillator, Quantum Computer)
- SAM Ore (likely will be changed in the 1.0 release)
Marv’s Tips
I had a “dump” Storage Container near my main base that connected directly to an AWESOME Sink with my current fastest Conveyor Belt. This gave me a place to easily dispose of any materials that were backing up systems or filling up my inventory.
Concrete is a good option for the very early game if you are looking to earn your first few coupons. It is only two steps (mining and constructing), and you will not need a ton of it early on.
Once I unlocked Caterium Ore in my first playthrough, I had an excess of Quickwire. It has a lot of uses later once you start making lots of computers, but before then it is worth sinking any excess as they are worth quite a lot of points and relatively simple to make.
If you have an excess of any item that is just backing up on the belts, it might be worth sending them to an AWESOME Sink until you have use for them; once you do need the item, you can always remove the sink. The only real downside to this is the increase in Power usage, but you might get a few extra coupons out of it. Especially helpful if you find yourself, like I do, spending hours fixing some inefficiency somewhere without finishing the processing line for some newly mined material.
I personally struggled on my first playthrough to get a perfect item usage ratio for Aluminum Scrap at my Aluminum Ingot smeltery. The scrap was backing up the system and causing it to stop working completely. I ended up using a Smart Splitter set to “Overflow” to get rid of the excess scrap into an AWESOME Sink. If you are ever struggling to get the ratios perfect for a factory, remember you can just sink the overflow.
