Classic Campaign – Mission 17: Sonja’s Goal!

Andy stops tooling around and takes on Sonja’s last test.

Mission Strategy

This is your last mission against Sonja, the Fog of War specialist. Remember that her units always have +1 vision range. During her CO Power, they gain an additional +1 vision range and can see into Woods and Reefs as if they were normal tiles.

She also hides the current health of her units. You’ll need to keep track of how much health her units have. If you don’t normally play with animations, consider turning them on so that you can see what health percentage her units are at (and the tiles type her indirect-fire units are in).

This mission has multiple ways to approach it. You can either try to win the battle at sea and cross your units over in your Lander, or move them through the south Woods and push north to her HQ. The battle will mostly be won or lost in the first three turns, when her sea and air units engage your army.

HQ Capture: Like many Fog of War missions, HQ capture normally turns out to be the quickest. With her Cruiser and Fighter, your Transport Copter will not likely survive. Instead, you can bring a Mech or Infantry along with your APC through the southern Woods, or try to get a landing force across and land near her HQ. Know that she has a single Tank hidden in the Woods near her HQ.

Defeat All Enemies: If you lose your Mechs and Infantry, you’ll instead need to track down all of Sonja’s units. Sonja has Rockets watching the water from the Woods on both the west and east side of the map. She also has multiple Tanks waiting in the northern Woods. Other than those, her other forces should come to you and be easy to find.


Turn by Turn Walkthrough

  • Since Sonja has a chance of dealing less damage with attacks, there is a bit of luck to this fight

Day 1

  • Load your east Mech into your Transport Copter
  • Load one of your Infantry into your APC
  • Advance your APC, dropping the Infantry to the east
  • Load our Rockets and Missiles into your Lander
  • Advance your Lander, dropping your Rockets into the Woods and Missiles onto the Beach
  • Advance your Submarine, Diving it
  • Advance your Battleship, Cruiser, Anti-Air, Tank, Medium Tank, Battle Copter, and Transport Copter

Day 2

  • Destroy the enemy Battle Copter with your Missiles
  • Destroy the enemy Cruiser with your Battleship
  • Attack the enemy Battleship with your Submarine
  • If your Lander survived, hide it in the south west Reef
  • Attack the enemy Submarine with your Battle Copter from the east
  • Destroy the south enemy Battle Copter with your Anti-Air
  • Retreat your injured Infantry
  • Advance your APC, Tank, Medium Tank, Transport Copter, Cruiser, and Rockets

Day 3

  • Activate Andy’s CO Power
  • Destroy the enemy Battleship with your Rockets
  • Advance your Cruiser and Battleship
  • Attack the enemy Submarine with your Submarine
  • Attack the north enemy Tank with your Battle Copter
  • If your APC survived, hide it in the Woods near the Sea
  • Attack the enemy Bomber with your Anti-Air
  • Advance your Tank, moving south first, then east to avoid the hidden enemy Tank
  • Attack the south enemy Tank with your Medium Tank

Day 4

  • Advance your Medium Tank
  • Destroy the south enemy Tank with your Tank
  • Destroy the enemy Bomber with your Missiles
  • Destroy the enemy Submarine with your Submarine
  • Attack the north enemy Tank with your Battleship
  • Attack the enemy Fighter with your Cruiser
  • Advance your Transport Copter and Battle Copter

Day 5

There is some randomness at this point based on how many low rolls Sonja has gotten. The general strategy is to use your two Copters to block the enemy Tank from attacking your Mech. Know that the AI will attack with their Tank BEFORE their Fighter, so your Copters can soak a hit from the Tank even if they will die to the Fighter.

  • Advance your Medium Tank (for Technique Rating)
  • Destroy the north west enemy Tank with your Battleship
  • Attack the enemy Tank with your Battle Copter (or just advance it if the enemy Tank did not come out of the Woods)
  • Advance your Transport Copter, dropping the Mech into the Woods
  • Retreat your Cruiser

Day 6

  • Start capturing the enemy HQ
  • Position your two Copters to stop the enemy Tank from attacking your Mech
  • Attack the enemy Artillery with your Medium Tank (for Technique Rating)

Day 7

  • Destroy the enemy Artillery with your Medium Tank (for Technique Rating)
  • Finish capturing the enemy HQ
